On August 5 the APWU, NALC, NRLCA, and Mailhandler unions issued a joint letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid opposing S. 1486. The letter, in part, stated: "This massive downsizing and the bill's assault on postal employee benefits are not necessary. The Postal Service has already pre-finded decades of retiree health premiums, more than any other enterprise in America. Indeed, the USPS has already set aside an estimated $49 billion for such premiums". 30 members of the Senate have already cosponsored S. 316, the Postal Service Protection Act of 2013. This bill would strengthen the Postal Service, promote innovation, and resolve the retiree health and pension polices that have crippled the Postal Service. All APWU local and state organizations are asked to contact their lawmakers during the summer recess to discuss postal reform. |
